A Touch of History: Exploring Our Local Historic Houses and Gardens

I do love a good period drama. Give me a beautiful country house, a sweeping staircase, elegant gardens and a little historical intrigue, and I'm quite happy! (I have to admit I adore the fabulous outfits in these period dramas too, even though personally I prefer to slouch around the house in my trackie bottoms and t-shirt.)
Of course, I'm acutely aware that much of our grand architectural heritage comes with a complicated history. The privilege and inequalities of the past have left their mark, both here in Britain and across the world. But one can still admire the extraordinary craftsmanship, architecture and landscapes that have survived through the centuries.
And, as anyone who knows me will tell you, I have a particular weakness for trees and plants. So, while others might be admiring the portraits and antique furniture, you'll probably find me wandering around the gardens, marvelling at an ancient tree.
Fortunately, we're rather spoilt for choice in this region. Within easy reach of Newberry Valley Park, there are some magnificent historic houses, castles and gardens where you can happily lose yourself for a few hours or even an entire day.
So, if you fancy swapping the coastal paths for a little history, horticulture and perhaps a rather nice cream tea, here are five places worth adding to your North Devon holiday itinerary.
Arlington Court: A Country House with a Few Surprises
Near Barnstaple, North Devon

Tucked away in the beautiful North Devon countryside, is an unusual Regency house with a fascinating collection of treasures, but it's the surrounding estate that particularly appeals to me. There are peaceful woodland walks, a lovely Victorian garden and plenty of opportunities to admire the changing seasons.
And then there's the National Trust Carriage Museum, home to an impressive collection of horse-drawn carriages. Even if carriages aren't normally your thing, it's fascinating to imagine the journeys these beautiful vehicles once made.
Good to know: National Trust property, with a café, shop and extensive grounds.
Castle Hill House & Gardens: A Landscape Designed to Impress
Near Filleigh, North Devon

This magnificent Palladian-style house sits within an extensive estate that has been associated with the Fortescue family for generations. And what a setting it has! The landscaped gardens include woodland walks, sweeping lawns, ornamental features and some lovely views across the surrounding countryside.
I particularly love gardens like these because they remind us that landscapes are never really finished. They evolve through the generations, shaped by both the people who care for them and nature itself.
Good to know: The gardens are the main visitor attraction, with refreshments available at advertised times. Check the website for opening arrangements.
Tapeley Park: Gardens with a Sea View
Near Instow, North Devon

Perched above the Taw and Torridge estuaries, Tapeley is known for its beautiful gardens, historic terraces and far-reaching coastal views. With the garden overlooking the water, it can be breathtaking when the light changes and the estuary begins to shimmer in the distance.
Tapeley also has a strong connection with sustainable gardening and permaculture, which I find particularly interesting. I love the idea of gardens that are not only beautiful but also productive, encouraging us to think about how we grow food and work alongside nature rather than against it.
Good to know: Check the estate's website before travelling, as public access and opening arrangements can vary.
Hartland Abbey: A Little History and a Lot of Atmosphere
Near Hartland, North Devon

Originally founded as a monastery in the 12th century, it has witnessed centuries of change and remains a family home today. Hartland Abbey has appeared in several film and television productions, so if you're a fellow period drama enthusiast, you may find parts of it strangely familiar!
The gardens have a delightfully relaxed feel, with woodland paths, beautiful plants and lovely places to stop and simply enjoy your surroundings.
And with the dramatic Hartland coastline nearby, it's easy to turn a visit into a wonderful day exploring this quieter corner of North Devon.
Good to know: Privately owned historic house and gardens, with seasonal opening, refreshments and a shop.
Dunster Castle & Watermill: A Fairytale Setting on Exmoor
Dunster, near Minehead, Somerset

Perched high above the picturesque village of Dunster, this impressive building has evolved from a medieval fortress into an elegant family home. It's a little further afield, but certainly worth considering for a day out.
The castle was associated with the Luttrell family for hundreds of years, and today it's cared for by the National Trust.
There's also a historic working watermill to explore, which adds another interesting dimension to the visit. And don't forget to allow some time for Dunster village itself. With its old cottages, independent shops and winding streets, it's a lovely place to wander.
Good to know: National Trust property, with refreshments, a shop, gardens and a historic watermill.
A Few Tips Before You Set Off
One thing worth remembering is that many historic houses and gardens operate seasonal opening hours, and some have different arrangements for the house and gardens. It's always worth checking their websites before setting off, particularly if you're hoping to explore the interiors or enjoy lunch during your visit.
If you're bringing your dog on holiday, do check the individual property's dog policy too. Some welcome dogs in their grounds or designated areas, while others have restrictions.
